What it's actually like to live with
Picking the right Apple TV model is the first thing buyers get wrong. The 64GB Apple TV 4K and the 128GB Apple TV 4K WiFi plus Ethernet look almost identical on the Amazon.com product page, but only the 128GB version includes Ethernet and Thread. For Apple Home households, that single hardware difference is the entire reason to spend the extra $20 to $30. A 64GB unit will run streaming fine and will still act as a Matter controller over WiFi, but it cannot anchor Thread-over-Matter accessories.
The wired Ethernet anchor is what makes large Apple Home setups behave. In a 2,800 sq ft two-story house with three mesh nodes, an Eero Pro 6E backbone, and 60 to 80 connected devices, an all-WiFi hub gets out-prioritized during 8 PM streaming. The Apple TV 4K 128GB plugs into the living room TV's Ethernet port and stays connected to the Home app even when iPhones, iPads, and a Frame TV are all hammering WiFi at the same time.
Thread border router functionality matters more in 2026 than it did in 2024. Most premium Matter accessories shipping this year, including the Schlage Encode Plus, the Aqara P2, the Eve Energy Outlet, and the Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, use Matter over Thread. Without a Thread border router on the network, those devices either pair through a separate bridge or fail to set up at all. The Apple TV 4K 128GB covers that role for the entire Apple Home ecosystem.
The streaming bonus is the part that closes the deal for most buyers. Apple TV 4K is genuinely the best premium streaming box in the US market in 2026, with cleaner UI, better app stability, and stronger privacy defaults than the Roku Ultra, Fire TV Cube, or Google TV Streamer at the same price. A buyer who was already going to spend $129 on a streamer essentially gets the Matter hub for free.
The honest limitation is radio depth. The Apple TV 4K 128GB does not include Zigbee or Z-Wave. If your home runs on Hue Zigbee bulbs, the Hue Bridge Pro stays in the picture. If you have a wall of Schlage Connect Z-Wave locks, the Aeotec Smart Home Hub is the bridge that keeps them alive. Apple TV 4K is the brain. Specialty bridges still handle their own jobs.
